About Mary
Animal Communication
I began studying telepathic animal communication in 1988 with Penelope Smith and since that time have completed numerous courses with a variety of teachers including Jeri Ryan, Carol Gurney, and Dorothy Maclean. I am certified to teach Penelope’s basic How to Communicate with Animals workshop.
My professional animal communication practice began in 1996, working with clients throughout the world for 22 years. I retired from consultations at the end of May, 2017 to allow me to focus more on teaching workshops and teleclasses and trips. I am now done teaching and leading trips.
Flower Essences
I completed the Flower Essence Practitioner course at the Flower Essence Society in Nevada City, CA in 1997. Since that time I have used this healing art extensively with humans and animals. Flower essences can facilitate profound shifts on an energy level and help animals release emotions such as anxiety, fear and jealousy. They are inexpensive, non-toxic and easy to use. I often created custom remedies for my clients.
Teaching
I loved teaching workshops and teleclasses and opening people to the inner world of animals and nature. I offered beginning and advanced How to Communicate with Animals workshops and several other classes. You can now enjoy 4 recorded teleclasses on your own anytime.
Wildlife
My journey with animal communication began during the four years (1986-90) I worked at the Marine Mammal Center, a hospital for seals and sea lions in Sausalito, CA. At the center I supervised an animal care crew and a harbor seal pup crew, and did rescues and releases. I was also a docent at Pier 39 in San Francisco after the sea lions took residence there.
I continued my work with wildlife in Washington State. For almost a decade I was a coordinator of the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network, on staff at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and a marine naturalist leading whale and wildlife cruises in the San Juan Islands. I also spent a winter leading humpback whale trips in Maui.
For 30 years, I took people to meet with whales and dolphins in the wild – dolphins in the Bahamas, Gray Whales in Baja, Mexico, Belugas in Canada, and humpbacks in the Dominican Republic and Tonga. I am now retired from leading these trips, but encourage you to go on your own!
Writing
I spent more than 13 years getting to know the orcas of the San Juan Islands and several years interviewing these whales about their lives. This information is available in my book, Communicating with Orcas – The Whales’ Perspective, published in 2006 by Hampton Roads. I’m pleased to announce that Communicating with Orcas won the 2007 Nautilus Award.
I am also the author of The Orca Pocket Guide, published by EZ Nature Books in 1996. This handy inexpensive book is filled with interesting, factual information about these incredible beings. Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family and are commonly known as Killer Whales.
I am a contributing author to Dolphins and Whales Forever, which was released in 2014. Previously, I contributed to Animal Voices, by Dawn Brunke, and Whale Tales, Volumes 1 & 2, by Peter Fromm.

Global Water Healing Meditation
The waters of our planet need out help. Each first Friday of the month, I host a Water Healing Meditation on a conference call. I have a variety of teachers, shamans, communicators and visionaries who lead the meditation to help us send love and healing to our planet’s water. These meditations are free and DO make a difference. The Global Water Healing website also contains archives of past meditations so you can do one whenever you want. Check it out at www.globalwaterhealing.org and join us on the First Friday of every month at noon EST.
Global Tree Lovers
I am a founding member of Global Tree Lovers.
Our Mission: We honor our tree kin for their generous gifts of beauty, harmony, healing, wisdom, pure joy and the very life force they contribute to our well being. Collectively, we cultivate and catalyze the healing of humanity’s often discordant relationship to the tree kingdom.
Our primary goal: We offer global tree meditations and celebrations to unite our fellow tree lovers to help awaken and deepen harmonious, respectful connections to our tree kin. By extending compassion and loving kindness, we may restore tree’s trust in humanity.
Our secondary goal: To contribute inspiring content that stimulates and catalyzes humankind to grow ever deeper appreciation and connectivity to the trees.
Our vision : As we unite, we create a rippling wave of spiritual awareness that awakens humankind to the notion that nature is not outside of us but rooted within us. We branch out to acknowledge our beloved tree kin as equal and conscious beings. We honor our sacred interdependent relationship, valuing all tree life for their generous gifts to humanity and the healthy respect they deserve for the important contributions they make.
